Less than a month until Seahawks rookies report for training camp

The slowest part of the NFL offseason has arrived, but it won’t be long before the Seahawks and the rest of the NFL are back on the field preparing for the season, and Tuesday we found out when exactly that will be for Seattle.

With mandatory minicamp in the rear view mirror, the Seattle Seahawks have finished their offseason program, and now it’s just a matter of waiting until it’s time to report for training camp.

Under Article 23, Section 5(a) of the collective bargaining agreement,

(a) For Clubs whose first regular season game is on a Thursday or a Sunday, all veteran players other than quarterbacks and injured players are required to report to the Club’s official preseason training camp forty-seven days (including one day for physical examinations, meetings, classroom instruction, running, and conditioning) prior to such regular season game.

Since the Seahawks are set to open with 2024 season on Sunday, September 8, 47 days prior to that falls on Tuesday, July 23, which is when the CBA requires veterans to report.

As for rookies, the CBA affords teams a tiny bit of wiggle room for rookies and first-year players, as

(e) No Rookie or first-year player will be required to report to a Club’s official preseason training camp earlier than seven days prior to the mandatory reporting date for that Club’s veteran players.

That would allow Seattle to have its rookies and first year players report as early as July 16. However, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the team will have rookies report on July 17.

With rookies reporting to camp on July 17, they would be on the field for the first practice on July 18, and give the rookies an opportunity to have completed the CBA-required five-day on-field acclimation period and have their first regular practice under their belts when veterans report on July 23.
