Mike Macdonald not certain Abe Lucas will be ready for training camp

While Anthony Bradford is out with an ankle injury and the rookie offensive linemen are working with the second team. So, it’s business as usual for the Seahawks during the offseason.

It’s the heart of the offseason, with Memorial Day just around the corner, and that means fans across the league are getting their first glimpses of players on the field for organized team activities. That also means that for football-starved fans desperate for news and information about their favorite team and players, the media availability of coaches is a welcome source of information.

Unfortunately for Seattle Seahawks fans, new head coach Mike Macdonald was not as upbeat regarding the health of right tackle Abe Lucas as he could have been. According to Macdonald, Lucas is attacking rehab following offseason surgery, but is not yet on the field participating in practice, though the goal remains for Lucas to be ready for training camp. That’s the goal, anyway.

As John Boyle notes in the tweet, Lucas isn’t the only member of the offensive line not practicing, as Anthony Bradford injured his ankle earlier in the week. However, Bradford’s injury is not considered serious, and he should be back on the field in a timely manner.

With Bradford and Lucas not practicing, that made for an interesting first team offensive line, with those taking first team reps from left to right being Charles Cross, Laken Tomlinson, Olu Oluwatimi, McClendon Curtis and George Fant.

Fant and Tomlinson are, of course, the veteran offseason additions, while the other three have combined for a total of 32 career starts in the NFL, with Cross accounting for 31 of those 32. Oluwatimi got the nod at center in the Week 7 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the lone start of his 2023 season, while Curtis saw the only action of his rookie season - 4 special teams snaps - in the same game.

For those curious where the Seahawks rookies fit in on the line at this point, Corbin Smith has that covered.

Obviously not a whole lot to be gleaned in terms of the depth chart from practice rotations early in OTAs, so there’s no reason for fans to worry about the fact that Christian Haynes, Sataoa Laumea, Garret Greenfield and Michael Jerrell were working with the second team offensive line. There’s a whole lot of time between now and training camp, much less before the start of the season in September, and there will be more than ample opportunity to get worked up about the rookies not seeing the field enough between now and Week 1.

Lastly, for those who are curious about Stone Forsythe, Brady Henderson offered this update.
